Saving Money and Time with UPS Batteries

Author: Michael Hargrove

For any business a UPS is almost a necessary office component. A UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, is a new device that keeps a computer running after a power outage to allow for proper shut down. This can be very important in offices where there is constant data coming in and being created. UPS are being updated with more technology to be even more practical in office settings when power problems occur. UPS use batteries to provide power, therefore it is very important to know the battery type so it is always up and running properly.

A UPS is equipped with a battery or batteries that switch on when the device senses a loss of power from the main power supply. When there is a power surge, the UPS intercepts the surge to keep it from harming the computer. Having a UPS is important because if a computer losses power unexpectedly, all the work or RAM is erased and thus lost. This can be very costly for business, and is why the sales of UPS have increased greatly.

UPS are equipped with different number of batteries and different types of batteries depending on the make and model. Seal lead acid batteries are used for the UPS. When purchasing UPS batteries, two important things to remember are size of the batteries and terminal style. To determine battery type, the UPS must be opened up and the terminals must be inspected. Any UPS can have a different amount of batteries it uses. Some use only 2 while others use 8. When purchasing replacement batteries, some dealers list batteries by make and model, while others provide a diagram of terminals to make sure it is the correct UPS battery. It is important to note that at times manufacturers change battery specifications without notice. When purchasing replacement batteries there are usually upgrade options available for batteries with higher capacity and longer life. These come in handy when UPS is used more frequently.

Software upgrades are available for many UPS units. These software upgrades provide the power supply with a function that allows it to automatically back up files once the UPS is activated due to power outage or power surge. This is a great new upgrade. If there is a power surge or power outage while the computer is unattended, there is no worry about loosing files.
