Flax Seed is Essential to a Healthy Diet

Author: Sharon Gilbert

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to a womans health. The most beneficial of these fatty acids are Flax Seed and Flax Seed Oil. Both contain large amounts of alpha-linolenic acid, also known as ALA. Alpha-linolenic acid is deemed an essential fatty acid. Although it is essential in womens health, ALA is not manufactured in the body so it must be obtained from an outside source. Certain plants, most particularly, flax seed, provide this much needed nutrient.

Flax seed has been called a near perfect food. It is abundant in fiber, essential fatty acids, also known as EFAs, as well as other nutrients including vitamins and minerals.

A daily intake of flax seed or flax seed oil is essential to a womans health. Here are some of the many benefits of flax seed:

Helpful in weight control
Cardiovascular support
Healthier skin
Regularity
Maintaining normal cholesterol levels
Aids in digestion
Reduces menopausal symptoms
Reduces PMS symptoms
Reduces blood pressure
Stress reduction
Maintains blood glucose levels
Supports the immune system
Supports the circulatory system
Supports the reproductive system
Helps to maintain healthy joints
Reduces risk of cancer
Helps in healing bruises and sprains
Increases the bodys energy levels
Strengthens nails
Reduces inflammation
Helps in controlling depression

Flax seed and flax seed oil are easily obtainable at health food stores. Flax seed oil can be taken in capsule or liquid form. Because oxygen and exposure to light can break down the essential fatty acids in the oil, flax seed oil should be purchased in opaque bottles and refrigerated. The recommended dosage is one tablespoon daily.

Flax seed can be added to many foods including salads and salad dressing, breads, muffins, cereals, cottage cheese and yogurt. In order to maintain its freshness and nutritional value, flax seed is best ground just prior to use. The recommended dosage is one to two tablespoons daily.

Flax seed is essential to a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle. Because the human body cannot manufacture ALA, women must rely on an outside source. Fortunately nature is able to provide the essential fatty acids vital to a womans health.
