We live in a world which is ever more demanding of the employee and employer alike.

We live in a world where the performance of the human element in any organisation is the deciding factor for corporate success.

We live in a world where the cop out 'I am what I am and don't expect me to change' is no longer acceptable from individuals Companies or even Countries. Change management and transformation are critical constant must-haves and are not optional.

We also live in a world of spiralling employment costs.

In light of these escalating employment costs, increasing workforce effectiveness is also a 'must have' for commerce and industry.

If an organisation could achieve a 5% increase in effective workforce output the positive impact on the bottom line could be dramatic.

There may be many underlying causes why a particular workforce is under performing.

The symptoms though may be:

Group tardiness, individual lack of enthusiasm for the job role, lack of team spirit, general workforce malaise, bickering, open conflict between team members, an overall 'feeling' of impending doom, negative chit-chat, etc, etc, etc,.

The result!

Low morale = Poor self-image = Lack of personal motivation = Key people leave = Existing customer base shrinkage = No new business = Company failure.

What is the antidote to such 'Corporate Malaise', (if it is not already too late)?

Commitment, courage and a creative cross functional outlook from the top.

Investment in high tech, state-of-the-art equipment may help an organisation become efficient.

To be effective however the workforce must be personally 'internally' motivated and possess a strong 'group identity and a strong self-image'.

It is people and positive relationships that cause an organisation to become effective, not offices full of an array of the latest gizmos.

How then may a company best invest in its workforce, and protect its' 'Human Capital'?

Take everyone 'paint-balling', rock climbing, go-karting, or go for a 'bonding weekend' in some remote corner of the Globe?

Maybe that does work for some people, for a short while.

But sooner or later the reality of each individual employee's personal situation returns and has to be faced, by them.

There is possibly a more effective solution!

To gain maximum quality output from their total workforce companies must:

Support the wants and needs of each individual employee.

Help them help themselves to overcome their own personal life and job role difficulties.
